"How much is a taxi into the city?" is one of the most common questions from arriving travellers. The honest answer: it depends — because taxis run on a meter. Here are the realistic numbers for 2026.
Frankfurt Taxi Tariff
The official Frankfurt taxi tariff combines a base fare of €4.00, €2.40 per kilometre, and waiting time at €38 per hour (the meter keeps running in traffic). That produces typical fares from the airport:
- Frankfurt city centre / Messe: €35–€55 depending on traffic
- Frankfurt Westend / banking district: €40–€60
- Wiesbaden or Mainz: €60–€90
- Longer routes (e.g. Cologne): outside Frankfurt's tariff area the fare is agreed with the driver before departure
In a large taxi, a €7 surcharge applies once more than four passengers ride, plus €1 for each passenger from the sixth; there are no surcharges for luggage or pets. Every Frankfurt taxi must accept credit or debit cards on request. And since December 2024, a taxi ordered in advance by phone or app may offer an agreed fixed price of €2.40–€4.00 per km, with no base fare.
The Hidden Costs of the Meter
The meter punishes exactly the situations you cannot control: rush hour on the A3, roadworks, diversions. The same ride into the city centre can cost €38 or €58 — and you only find out at the destination. After big arrival waves, add the queue at the taxi rank, especially late at night.

Honestly: for spontaneous short hops with no pre-booking. If you land without a plan and just need to get into the city quickly, the taxi ranks outside Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are perfectly fine. But as soon as you know your arrival time — and with a flight, you always do — there is little reason to give up a fixed price and a waiting driver.
Bottom Line
Taxi from FRA: flexible but unpredictable. Fixed-price transfer: plannable, often cheaper, with service included. For budget travellers, the S-Bahn (€6.90 for an RMV single ticket to the city centre) remains unbeatable — if stairs and crowds are not a problem.
