Getting online the moment you land makes everything easier — maps, your ride, messages home. At Frankfurt Airport you have two good options: buy a physical SIM at the terminal, or set up an eSIM before you even take off. Here is how to choose in 2026.
The Fastest Option: eSIM
If your phone supports eSIM (most recent iPhones and Android flagships do), this is the easiest route: buy a Germany or Europe eSIM online before you travel, or connect to the free airport WiFi on arrival and activate one in minutes. No queue, no shop, no swapping out your home SIM. You land already connected. Buying a Physical SIM at FRA
Don’t count on a choice of network shops: Fraport’s shop directory lists one mobile-network store, the Samsung / o2 Shop in Terminal 1 (Area A, level 0), open Monday to Friday 09:00–19:00, Saturday 10:00–18:00 and Sunday 11:00–18:00. It is closed for early-morning and late-evening arrivals, and no network shop is listed in Terminal 3 — one more reason many travellers sort out data before they fly.
The Registration Rule (Don't Get Caught Out)
German prepaid SIMs must be identity-verified — bring your passport, or you can't activate the card.
By law, prepaid SIMs require registration with photo ID. In-store staff handle it on the spot with your passport. This is exactly why many travellers prefer an eSIM bought in advance — the verification is done online before you fly.
Already Have an EU SIM?
Thanks to "roam like at home" rules, an existing SIM from any EU country works in Germany at no extra cost within your plan's fair-use limits. UK and other non-EU travellers should check roaming charges — a local eSIM is often far cheaper than roaming.
Free Airport WiFi as a Bridge
