Freudenstadt was founded in 1599 by Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg and laid out by his master builder Heinrich Schickhardt, and many of its first citizens were Protestants who had left the Inner Austrian provinces. At its centre lies an arcaded market square often described as the largest in Germany, with the Stadtkirche at its southern corner, a rare L-shaped church whose two naves once seated men and women separately. French troops destroyed about 95 per cent of the centre on 16 April 1945, and within five years the town was rebuilt on its original plan. Freudenstadt stands at over 700 metres on the eastern edge of the northern Black Forest and is both a climatic health resort and a Kneipp spa. Two kilometres south of the centre, Lauterbad has two wellness hotels: Hotel Lauterbad, with an indoor pool, a panoramic outdoor pool and a kitchen holding two toques in the Große Restaurant-Guide, and the four-star superior Hotel Grüner Wald with its AquaViva spa.
