Rhein in Flammen — Rhine in Flames — is the Rhine valley's summer signature: a convoy of illuminated ships glides downriver while fireworks rise from castles, vineyard slopes and river banks. The series runs as five separate evenings between May and September, and four of them lie within comfortable reach of Frankfurt and Frankfurt Airport.
The Five Nights at a Glance
- Bonn (Bonn–Linz stretch): traditionally the first Saturday in May — the 2026 edition has already taken place.
- Bingen & Rüdesheim: traditionally the first Saturday in July — the closest event to Frankfurt, about an hour away.
- Koblenz (Spay–Koblenz): traditionally the second Saturday in August, ending with the grand finale below Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.
- Oberwesel: traditionally the second Saturday in September, framed by the town's medieval wall towers.
- St. Goar & St. Goarshausen: traditionally the third Saturday in September, with fireworks between Rheinfels Castle and the Loreley.
Exact dates are set by the regional tourism organisers each year — confirm the evening you are planning around before booking travel.
Where to Watch
The riverbank promenades fill up early; locals bring picnic blankets to the vineyard paths above the towns for a wider view. In Bingen and Rüdesheim, the Niederwald monument side gives you the fireworks mirrored in the river. In Koblenz, the Deutsches Eck headland — where Rhine and Moselle meet — puts you directly opposite the fortress finale; the Koblenz & Deutsches Eck private tour (from €175) covers exactly this ground by day.
The fireworks start after dark — but the trains back to Frankfurt do not wait for the last rocket.
Getting There (and Back) from Frankfurt
Regional trains serve the Rhine towns, but on firework nights they run packed, and the ride back to Frankfurt with connections can take two hours or more after midnight. A private transfer solves the part of the evening the event cannot: your driver drops you near the promenade in the afternoon, waits through the fireworks and drives you door-to-door back to Frankfurt or the airport — no night-train timetable, no parking hunt on closed riverside roads.
By day, the same stretch of river is the classic Rhine Valley tour territory: the Loreley rock tour (from €149) and the Rüdesheim & Rhine gorge tour (from €140) both visit the towns that later light up.
Practical Notes
- Book early: hotels in Rüdesheim, Koblenz and St. Goar sell out weeks ahead of their firework Saturdays.
- Arrive in the afternoon: riverside roads close early; plan to be in town well before dusk.
- Boat tickets: a place on one of the illuminated convoy ships is the premium way to see the show — book months ahead through the KD or local operators.
- Weather: the events run rain or shine; the fireworks are only cancelled in extreme conditions.
