Alsace is the most popular French destination from Frankfurt Airport: Strasbourg with its cathedral and the European Parliament, Colmar with "Little Venice", and the Wine Route villages in between.
Frankfurt Airport to Strasbourg
The drive via the A5 takes about 2 hours 15 minutes (220 km). It is a Schengen border, so there is no fixed passport control, but both sides currently run temporary checks: France has notified checks at its internal borders, including with Germany, until 31 October 2026, and Germany at all its land borders until 15 March 2027. Onwards to Colmar
Colmar lies 70 km south of Strasbourg — via the Colmar transfer it is about 2 hours 40 minutes from FRA. In Advent, the Christmas markets of both towns are among Europe's finest; in summer, the Alsace Wine Route beckons.
One drive, two countries, no change of vehicle — Alsace practically begins just past Karlsruhe.
The Train Alternative
By rail you reach Strasbourg from FRA in about 2 hours to 2 hours 50 minutes with one or two changes, usually in Mannheim, Karlsruhe or Offenburg; fares depend on how early you book. Doable — but with luggage and no direct connection, it loses to the door-to-door transfer.
Our Recommendation
For couples and families heading to an old-town hotel, the private transfer is the most comfortable choice: fixed price, no changes, a boot instead of dragging suitcases. All France, Switzerland, and Benelux routes are under cross-border transfers.
