Gießen is a university city first and everything else second. The Justus Liebig University, founded in 1607, and the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) together give the town one of the highest student ratios in Germany, and every October and April a wave of new arrivals lands at Frankfurt Airport with two or three suitcases and an address for a hall of residence they have never seen. Gießen is also a stop for visiting academics, for families of the many international students, and for business travellers heading into the Lahn valley. At 70 km from the airport it sits in the zone where the train is cheap but awkward and the private transfer is quick and affordable. Here is how the options compare in 2026.
Distance and Journey Time
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to Gießen is about 70 km, almost entirely on the A5 heading north. The car leaves the airport, passes the Frankfurter Kreuz and the Nordwestkreuz, and runs past Bad Homburg, Friedberg and Butzbach before the Gießen exits. In normal traffic the journey takes roughly 50 minutes. The A5 around the two Frankfurt junctions is congested on weekday mornings and from about 4pm, so a rush-hour transfer can take 65 to 70 minutes. Your driver watches live traffic and adjusts the route if the motorway blocks.
Option 1: Private Transfer (FrankfurtRide)
A private transfer takes you from the arrivals hall to the door of your hall of residence, hotel or family home in Gießen with no change and no lifting of bags onto trains. The driver meets you with a name sign at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, tracks your flight, and the price is fixed at the time of booking. Live pricing is on the Frankfurt Airport to Gießen transfer page.
Three suitcases, a jet-lagged student and a parent who wants to see the room before flying home: this is exactly the trip a fixed-price car is for.
- Journey time: about 50 minutes door-to-door
- Cost: fixed price from €111 for up to 3 passengers; Business Class from €123; Business Van (up to 8) from €130
- Luggage: included, no extra charge, and the van takes a full semester's worth
- Booking: instant online, 24/7, free cancellation, 90 minutes of free waiting time at the airport
Option 2: S-Bahn and Regional Train
There is no direct train from the airport to Gießen. You take the S-Bahn from the airport's regional station to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, which takes around 15 minutes, then change to a regional express or regional train on the Main-Weser line to Gießen, another 35 to 50 minutes depending on the service. Including the change and the walk between platforms at the Hauptbahnhof, plan for about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. Gießen's station is on the west side of the centre, so most university addresses still need a bus or a taxi at the end.
- Journey time: about 1h to 1h 15m with one change, plus onward travel in Gießen
- Cost: roughly €15–€30 per person depending on ticket type; both legs are regional services, so a Deutschlandticket covers them
- Best for: solo travellers with one bag who already know the route
Option 3: Taxi
A metered taxi from the airport rank will typically come to around €145–€165 for the 70 km, with no fixed quote in advance. The pre-booked transfer is normally cheaper and comes with a driver who is already waiting when you land rather than a queue at the rank.
Arriving as a Student or a Parent
Semester start is when this route gets busy. Lectures for the winter semester begin in mid-October and for the summer semester in mid-April, and most new international students arrive in the two weeks before. A few practical notes from our drivers:
- Luggage limits: an Economy car takes three passengers and around three large cases. If you are travelling with a parent and the full contents of a bedroom, book the Business Van; it holds up to eight people or a great deal of luggage.
- Halls of residence: give the exact street address of the Wohnheim in the booking, not just the university. The Studentenwerk halls are spread across the town, and the driver will drop you at the right entrance.
- Delays: if the flight is late the driver simply waits; 90 minutes are free, and the fixed price does not change.
- The return trip: parents flying home two days later can book the reverse transfer from Gießen to the airport in the same session, with early pickups from 4am for morning departures.
Wettenberg, Linden, Lich and Lahnau
The Gießen area is a ring of smaller towns, and many bookings are for addresses just outside the city. Wettenberg lies to the north-west (Wettenberg transfer, about 82 km), Linden to the south (Linden transfer, about 70 km), Lich, the brewery town, to the south-east (Lich transfer, about 66 km), and Lahnau on the road towards Wetzlar (Lahnau transfer, about 79 km). Each has its own fixed price. Marburg, the neighbouring university town, is served as well.
What to See in Gießen
Gießen is not a postcard town, but it has a handful of genuinely good stops. The Mathematikum is a hands-on mathematics museum, the first of its kind, and works for children and adults alike. The Liebig Museum preserves the original laboratory where Justus von Liebig taught chemistry and trained a generation of scientists; it is one of the most atmospheric science museums in Germany. The botanical garden, dating from the early 1600s, is among the oldest in the country still on its original site. The town also carries a visible American legacy: US forces were based in Gießen for decades until the mid-2000s, and the former depot and barracks areas are now being redeveloped. Beyond the centre, the Schiffenberg monastery on its wooded hill and the Lahn cycle path make for an easy afternoon.
Our Recommendation
For a solo traveller with one bag, the S-Bahn and regional train are cheap and perfectly workable. For a student arriving with a semester's luggage, for parents accompanying them, for two or more travellers sharing the fixed price, and for anyone landing at rush hour or late in the evening, the private transfer is faster, simpler and usually cheaper per person than a taxi.
